About the Upscale Berlin

About the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood
Situated to the northeast of the historical heart of Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg (Berg means hill by the way, and yes, this was once high ground!) started life as a working class neighborhood built towards the end of the 19th century. Some dark things happened here during the previous century. The Nazi’s placed their first concentration camp in a water tower machine house (now torn down) located nearby and one of the deadliest strips of the Berlin Wall ran through the neighborhood. But, having found itself on the eastern side of the Wall, the neighborhood soon became the locus for East German counterculture.
In the 1960s it was home to Christian activists, bohemians, anti-government artists and the gay community. It was from here that the peaceful revolution to bring down the Berlin Wall began. Keeping to this theme of the avant-garde, in the 1990s a freewheeling collection of squatters; radical democrats, anarchists and others moved in, setting up community projects such as bicycle repair shops and soup kitchens as well and underground poetry slams and concerts. By 2000 the state-owned buildings were sold to developers and prices began to rise (and rise…).

Very cool idea! great way to taste Berlin!

Our expectations for the German cuisine were quite low I have to say, but the Prenzlauer-Berg tour completely changed our mind about Berlin's culinary scene. Great places, very nice and inviting people, and just by walking and seeing so many different people from different backgrounds just showed us how interestingly-divese this city is.
