Top 5 Morning Bites in Skopje, Macedonia
By Milena Petrovska

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A smart choice gives you the energy you need throughout the day, while a delicious choice gives you the much-craved feeling of happiness. Either way, everyone agrees that one must not skip the breakfast.

For those planning to visit Skopje, the Capital of Macedonia, I have prepared a list of top 5 morning bites in my hometown. Creating a top 5 list is always a challenge, especially as I could think of many other delicious breakfast ideas for food enthusiasts.

However, I believe that these 5 not only are must-try dishes when in Skopje, but also are suitable for travellers that enjoy meat as well as for vegans and vegetarians.

Are you ready?

Those unfamiliar with the magnificent dish of burek, should know that this is a baked  pastry filled delicious stuff. It is usually found in round form and people usually buy 1/8 or 1/4 of it. Offered with numerous fillings, you can find burek with minced meat, white cheese and spinach. Modern-day fillings also include cottage cheese, cheese and ham and even a pizza filling.

Burek is found in pretty much all bakeries around Skopje and usually it goes perfectly with yoghurt. Just keep in mind that here in Skopje when we say yoghurt we think of a liquid dairy drink, which is more similar to kjefir than the well-known Greek yoghurt.

The burek on the photo above was bought in a popular 24/7-open bakery in Debar Maalo called Silbo. However, you can also find it in another popular bakeries including Milenium, Specijal, La Deliciousand so on.

Silbo Gjevrek and Mini Sandwich

Remember the popular SIlbo bakeryWell, this place is close to my home and I often eat there in result. One of their best products is their own invention called Silbo Gjevrek, which is the round pastry that has bacon in it. This is a tasty and affordable breakfast option that I recommend to everyone.

If just one gjevrek (gjevrek is the term used for all round pastries and can be baked, boiled etc.) is not enough for you, you can spice it up with delicious mini sandwiches. One of these is less than 0.5 EUR and they are always freshly made.

Many restaurants that offer breakfast menus feature plain omelette as well as omelettes with various additions. Thus, if you want something more dramatic, you can opt for an omelette with mushrooms or an omelette with cheese and ham.

The one on the photo above can be found at a popular restaurant in the city centre called Gnezdo(“гнездо”in Macedonian is the term for “a nest”). This place has average prices, tasty food and it’s just across the Mother Theresa Memorial House. Nevertheless, omelette is offered at many other stops as well including Trend Lounge Bar, Amigos, BackYard Baretc.

Club Sandwich

Club Sandwich, just like omelette, is a popular dish that doesn’t need too much introduction. Usually made with lettuce, tomatoes, ham, peperoni and cheese, Club Sandwich is a great option for two. It is always served with French fries and dips; thus, I usually order it when I have a friend to split it with. This one was ordered in Gnezdo and was pretty good.

Vegan Pear and Walnut Salad

Skopje boasts several top-notch vegan and vegetarian restaurants and bars. These have numerous healthy breakfast options, both salty and sweet.

The salad in the photo seemed like a very cool and delicious breakfast bite to me; hence, I chose it for the post. As you can see, it has fresh lettuce, cherry tomatoes, pear and walnuts. Plus, there’s a delicious dip to make the dish more savoury. In addition to Vega Fresh Bar, vegans can also find other tasty breakfast options at Vegan 365 Kitchen, Freshys,Harmonyand BistRaw.
